I’m reading a great non-fiction book right now, Change Your Brain, Change Your Body by Daniel G. Amen, M.D. If you suffer from depression, memory loss, ADD, overeating, or have difficulty losing weight, you are going to want to read this book to discover why you eat the chocolate muffin, even when you know what it’s going to do to your body and how it’s going to make you feel after. This book is about how by taking control of the health of your brain, you create a healthy body.

Dr. Amen, in addition to teaching you how to take the steps to change your brain’s health, is also a big believer in Hypnotherapy. I’ve had my share of experimenting with Hypnotherapy over the years and have never found anyone that I felt was talented enough to recommend to my clients, but now I have, Steven Clark C.Ht.

In reading Dr. Amen’s book I’ve discovered that I eat, not because I am hungry, but to calm my brain. This was incredibly eye opening!! I’m finding myself saying “DUH!” every time a turn a new page in this book. Now I’m learning new ways to calm my brain versus going for The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf chocolate muffin, that has pretty much been my drug of choice for the last few years.

I’ve had just two sessions with Stephen Clark C.Ht who is a hypnotist and life coach in Los Angeles. The focus in both sessions have been to target my sugar and carb addiction. After my first session I didn’t eat carbs for two days straight. YAY! So, I had another session to go after the next layer of the onion in my subconscious.

The same day I had my second session, I had proof it was patterns were changing. That night I was out with friends and we decided to have a late dinner. When we sat down at our table, looking over the menu I realized that I wasn’t hungry and choose not to eat. That for me is life changing!

I’ve just arrived in NYC for the first leg of my reading trip to New York and London (email me to set up an in person appointment). When I travel, I seem to come home ten pounds heavier than when I left. My goal this trip is to come home ten pounds lighter…or okay let’s get real…I’d just be thrilled to come home the same weight.

Decorating Your Space

Have you ever walked into a room and felt peculiarly uncomfortable? Not necessarily due to who was in the room, but what was in there. Say your friend invites you over for a cocktail and some deep profound conversing. You’re in the midst of negotiating how the two of you alone can solve world peace, yet you find yourself distracted. From where you are sitting you are forced to stare at this painting that is hanging crooked on the wall. At this point world peace is going to have to be put on hold because for now your only thoughts are about straightening out the art work.

Your home represents much more than where you live and provides more than just a roof over your head. You can get a good idea of what’s going on inside of you by the house you keep. Are you a (perfectionist) neat freak who’s under ware drawer looks like Victoria’s secret retail? Do you keep your visible quarters orderly, yet (afraid to let others really see you) your closet is in constant chaos? Or perhaps you are a tad messy with your belongings spread out all over, but you know exactly where that very thing you (control freak) are looking for is?

Your habitat can be your own personal heaven or hell, by paying more attention to the most important relationship you have, the one with you. Think of it like this; just as your physical body temporarily houses your spirit, the address you dwell at becomes the sanctuary in which you pray at. (However, let’s replace the word pray with live.) Obviously what you wish to do with your space is all up to you. As in any situation, awareness is the key. The more comfortable you become in your sanctuary, the more in touch you can become with you and the closer you can be on your path toward creating the life that you desire.

As I have continually preached in this column, we all have a psychic sense whether we are in touch with it or not. Because of this we are unconsciously sensing the energies around us all of the time. Believe it or not, the colors you paint your walls, where you put your furniture, and how you decorate your dwelling all effect you on a daily basis.

Those of you with sleeping disorders who pop pills just to get some shut-eye, might find a cure by simply moving your bed. Energetically it is best for us to sleep with the crown of our head toward the East, but in reality, only you can find what personally works best. Perform your own experiment by moving your bed around in different directions and locations (in your bedroom) to discover which provides the most satisfying sleep for you. It might take some muscle and a few attempts to find the right spot, but I assure you that tranquil sleep is well worth a little effort.

Some years back the headquarters of the Bank of China in Hong Kong caused a little legendary stir. They constructed an angular high-rise designed with sharp shiny corners that in the practice of Feng Shui created a threatening discomfort to it’s surrounding competitors. Business people in the area complained that the building was deliberately designed against them and sought consult of their own Feng Shui masters to then combat the bad energy being directed toward them. Low and behold, the area soon recovered from the draining energies felt from the building. Life returned back to it’s original state of peace of prosperity there and thus began the now growing popularity of Feng Shui.

I am not going to attempt to teach you the art of Shuing your Feng here. There are plenty of books and professionals out there that you can consult for that. However, we are going to take a peak at how you decorate your space and see what additions you can make to have a happy home and an even happier you.

ARIES decorating style is: Ultra-modern and avant-garde, designer sheets, red, metals, gadgets, and fireplaces. Your home benefits by adding: An aromatherapy oil diffuser to keep your place smelling like a spa.

TAURUS decorating style is: Big and bold, feel over look, natural materials, Baroque, brocade, flowers, and pillows. Your home benefits by adding: A Bonzai Tree to connect you with and represent the Tree of Life.

GEMINI decorating style is: Trendy and spacious, bright, saturated color hues, things in twos, stocked for guests and parties. Your home benefits by adding: A meditation area with shrine to center yourself and find the deeper you.

CANCER decorating style is: Shabby-chic, antique, picture frames, watercolors and garden accessories. Your home benefits by adding: A whirlpool for your tub so you can take a long soak after you’ve been crabby.

LEO decorating style is: Luxurious, sophisticated, one of a kind pieces, velvet drapes, leather couches, sunset colors. Your home benefits by adding: A padded toilet seat so you can truly be the king of your own thrown.

VIRGO decorating style is: Orderly, eastern, earthy, horticulture, dried flowers, handmade crafts, and a home office. Your home benefits by adding: A statue of the Ganesh to bring you good luck and fortune.

LIBRA decorating style is: Soft, sophisticated, bright, crystal vases, pastoral art, pink, and things in pairs. Your home benefits by adding: A canopy above your bed to keep you and your dream space protected.

Even though I’ve switched from PC to Mac, happily, I just can’t seem switch to the iPhone due to the keyboard. I live on my phone (who doesn’t) due to accessibility to clients. I’ve spent some serious time trying to get use to the touch screen keys on the iPhone and it just ain’t going to happen.

Fashion’s moon is moving into the seventh house

Gypsy chic is so yesterday in the fashion world. The truly trend forward are dumping their raggedy layers of crystal ball-gazing bohemian style in favor of a more futuristic, almost New Age, aesthetic. These are few of the looks being sported by members of the Age of Aquarius, circa 2009:

Crystal Point Jewelry: Those who’ve managed to hang on to their junior high jewelry boxes are scoring in the form of crystal point pendants that are once again in vogue. Popular in the ’90s among girls who probably had far more familiarity with a Ouija board than with tarot cards, jewelry once relegated to cultish spirituality shops is now being sported among the hipster set. While those who no longer have their prepubescent accessory collections are looking to eBay to recapture those nostalgic treasures; a number of current, more fashion-oriented, jewelry designers are creating in-demand modernist takes on quartz baubles. Unearthen’s still incredibly popular bullet-encased crystals have spawned countless similar pieces in the Etsy marketplace. We can’t say for sure who conceived the idea first, but the Etsy versions are certainly more in keeping with the budget afforded by a middle school allowance.

Intergalactic Prints: Florals may be all the rage this summer, but we think the next big trend in prints is going to be a more cosmic take on the natural world. Already seen in the form of celestial tie-dying techniques, as sported by Katy Perry in this Style.com blog post, outer space prints are showing up on and off the runway. Similarly far out, Shabd Simon-Alexander’s press-grabbing collection of hand-dyed cotton basics is inspired by Hubble telescope photos. And the Fall 2009 collection, entitled “Crystalarium” from rising indie fashion label Vena Cava, features glamorous holographic sequins and patterns that appear plucked straight from a planetarium by way of a prism. We expect the stars to align for constellation prints to soon join the trend.

Triangles: Geometry class’ most spiritual shape is suddenly de rigueur. Self-described “Band, Belief System, and Business” YACHT is very closely associated with the shape, both referencing it in their mission statement and even going so far as to hand out pamphlets, entitled Why Triangles?, that explain their appropriation of the triangle as a band icon. The universal mysticism of the shape is appealing not only in its openness to interpretation, but also in its aesthetic. Perhaps also born out of the Egyptian motif trend, bold triangle graphics are being seen all over the fashion landscape. Popular among the crowd along Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn designer Mary Meyer has become well-known for her hip triangle-printed wares, while even the controversial yet still undeniably trendsetting American Apparel recently introduced a triangle print to its roster. While it’s yet to over-saturate the design world, we’ll take the triangle over yet another deer silhouette any day.
